Causes
- Drug interaction
- Low blood sugar
- Low blood pressure
- Dehydration
- Hyperventilating (breathing rapidly)
- Coughing very hard
- Straining during a bowel movement
First Aid Treatment
- Call 911.
- Check the patient's airway. If they are not breathing
begin CPR
if you are dealing with a child under the age of one
use infant CPR.
- If the person is breathing, lying on their back, and you do not think there is a spinal injury, carefully roll the person toward you onto the side. Bend the top leg so both hip and knee are at right angles. Gently tilt the head back to keep the airway open. If breathing or pulse stops at any time, roll the person on his back and begin CPR.
- If you expect a spinal injury do not move the body. If the person vomits turn the head to one side
- Keep the patient warm until help arrives
- If you see the patient fainting try and prevent a fall by catching them
- If you suspect that low blood sugar is the cause give something sweet to drink as soon as consciousness returns
- DO NOT splash water on the face of an unconscious person to try and revive them
- DO NOT place a pillow under the head of an unconscious person
