First Aid for Concussions

Concussions are common. Many people have had concussions without even realizing it. First aid for concussions is a good skill to have.

All concussions temporarily effect how the brain functions, even mild ones. They can affect judgment, speech, balance, memory, coordination and reflexes.

There a common misconception that you have to loss consciousness to have a concussion. This isn't true. With most concussions you will not loss consciousness.

Concussions are common occurrences in contact sports. Luckily most concussions will heal completely with a little rest. Here's what to do.

Symptoms

  • Dizziness
  • Headache
  • Ringing in the ears
  • Slurred speech
  • Vomiting or nausea

First Aid Treatment

  • Rest is the best treatment for concussions
  • Take a pain reliever as needed

See your doctor if you notice these symptoms

  • Impaired coordination and balance
  • If the person losses consciousness, even if it's just for a moment
  • Loss of smell or taste
  • Large bruise on the scalp
  • Prolonged headache and dizziness
  • Prolonged memory loss
  • Ringing in the ears
  • Seizures
  • Vision does not return to normal. Blurred vision, double vision, seeing spots or lights.
  • Vomiting or nausea
