First Aid For
Bruises

Here we have first aid for bruises. A bruise forms when the small blood vessels near the surface of the skin break. This allows small amounts of blood to leak into the surrounding tissue.

This trapped blood is what gives the characteristic black and blue marks of a bruise.

If the skin isn't broken, you don't need a bandage.

First Aid Treatment

  • If possible elevate the injured area.
  • Apply a cold pack or ice for the first few days after the injury. 30 minutes on then 30 minutes off.
  • Use a pain reliever if needed.
  • If the skin is not broken, you don't need a bandage.

See your doctor if...

  • The bruises are unusually large or painful.
  • The bruise appeared with no apparent cause.
  • You notice other bleeding. Such as bleeding gums, nose or blood in your stool or urine.
  • You do not have a history of bruising but suddenly start bruising easily.
