Flooding the latest weather threat in Midwest

The most common of all natural disasters, floods can happen anywhere. Some develop slowly and others can come from out of nowhere called, appropriately enough, a "flash".

Be prepared no matter where you live, but particularly if you are in a low-lying area, near water or downstream from a dam. Even a very small stream or dry creek bed can overflow and create problems.

Latest News

DETROIT Utilities in Michigan scrambled Monday to restore power knocked out by a gusty weekend storm as rain and melting snow caused flooding there and in other parts of the Midwest. About 132,000 customers were without electricity in Michigan, down from more than 400,000 on Sunday, according to the state's utilities. Some could remain without power until Wednesday because of Sunday's storm, which carried winds gusting more than 60 mph.

ALERT! Firestorms: Gov. Declares State of Emergency in CA.

Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger today proclaimed a state of emergency in Los Angeles County as a result of the Sayre Fire which has already burned over 2,600 acres, damaged or destroyed over 165 homes and required mandatory evacuations and road closures. The proclamation utilizes all resources consistent with the state's authority under the California Disaster Assistance Act.

There is no time like the present to start planning for an emergency.
The proper information and the right first-aid kit is a great place to start.
